HeartSGBlogs:Resourcefulness

Life is indeed full of obstacles, failures and setbacks. I am sure that no one can get through life without having to face any challenges.

When we fail, why? People give reasons and blame it due to the lack of resources. No money, no time, no support, no contacts, not having a right leader, etc. However, the limitations of resources does not play a major contributing factor to our failures, it is instead our own lack of resourcefulness.

Singapore is a clear example, with almost no natural resources, how is Singapore one’s of world most economical powerful country? How did Singapore overcome the issues of limited resources?

It is when we have nothing, and surrounded by enemies that allows one to create opportunities and make it through tough times. This comes with the skill of resourcefulness.

Resourcefulness is not the quantity that matters, but rather the quality.

The most powerful resource is resourcefulness in itself.

It is the ability to use the limited resources that you have and create something out of it. It is the ability to consider multiple angles and perspectives of the same resources, having the ability to make use of something that seemed to be a constraint.

Resourcefulness is built upon emotional states, like persistence, creativity, adaptability, etc., and these are much more lasting. It gives one the capacity to get through life. It enables the commitment and dedication to conquer challenges, make dreams come true, and most importantly making life meaning and worthwhile.

3 habits to cultivate resourcefulness

Do activities that allow you to think out of the box

Some examples include playing puzzles, Sudoku, word games, or even challenging yourself by having a Conversation WITHOUT Using the Letter “E”. This trains your creativity to see the same situation in different perspectives, forms and angles. It develops the innate capacity to not stick to the same set of solutions and thought processes.

Make full use of your resources

Activities can include multi-tasking to ensure that you maximize the time that you have, the habit of decluttering to ensure that your space is not being taken up by the unnecessary, practicing the art of recycling to remind you that even a small piece of plastic still has its value.

Always have a reason

Reasons are passions and commitments to actions; they are the key that drives you to build your own resources when you are pushed to the brim. Start by developing the habit of asking ‘why’ before you act rather than just purely doing the action. Question yourself in a way you have never. The more ‘why’ you ask, the more it trains your brain to think, and finally making your actions logical, dedicating motivation and passion to whatever you do.
